John Arthur Magnall was born in 1936 in Salford (RoB Salford 1936 Q3 Vol.8d p.467), the son of John (Jack) Frederick Magnall (DM158) and Rachel Thomas.

John married Doreen Cowie in Salford in 1959 (RoM Salford 1959 Q3 Vol.10f p.1275). They had at least one child:

• John Richard (BM143) b.1966 (RoB Barton 1966 Q1 Vol.10b p.413);
